Key Light This is the main light source. It is the strongest, and has the most influence on the photograph. Fill Light This light is placed on the opposite side to the key light. It is used to fill the shadows created by the key light. It is usually softer than the key light, placed further away and has more of a flood than the key light. Back Light The back light (sometimes called the ‘hair light’ in portrait photography) is placed behind the subject to help them to stand out from the background. Its purpose is to provide definition and subtle highlights around the subject.
